Criminality in this country is often visualized in terms of blackness (or non-whiteness). I wonder, with this pervasive construct, how we see each other in contexts removed from crime. I have often been told that I look like a range of black celebrities, that truly, only share one common visual characteristic: the color of our skin. Although, even that is problematic as the skin tones of my supposed doppelgangers vary wildly as well. Based on these personal experiences and the historical context of the 'Black Male Perpetrator' I would like to initiate a an interactive performance that pairs a composite artist with participants in an effort to create a descriptive image of a Black Male. The 'Person of Interest', if you will, will be an individual known to the 'Eyewitness': A friend, a relative, or a lover. I am curious to discover how seeing in the scenario operates. Developing...
